2005 SLK350

The first-generation SLK was seen as cute and somewhat underpowered despite its supercharged four. The only two numbers Mercedes-Benz want you to know about the new V-6-powered model are these: 5.4, that’s the roadster’s impressive 0-60 time. We’ll attest that the all-new SLK 350 has the looks to go with its velvet punch. You can’t miss this comely two-seater’s parentage.

A newly redesigned folding aluminum hardtop works quickly and efficiently. When you push the actuator, the top quickly splits into three folding parts; the front section actually flips over, and the entire, scissor-shaped assembly neatly stores in the trunk in just 22 seconds. You’ll appreciate this tin-top’s comfort in winter months when the very idea of a soft top is like covering an open window with a blanket.

Mercedes-Benz calls this model a Coupe-Roadster because, with the folding top, it really is two cars in one. If you do insist on winter driving with the top down, M-B offers an optional AIRSCARF neck-level heating system. With the AIRSCARF on, a pleasantly unobtrusive stream of warm air circulates around your exposed head. It automatically compensates for air temperature and speed changes, keeping you remarkably comfortable on cold days. Even with the lid lowered, there’s 6.5 cu. ft. of trunk space.

Inside, twin instrument binnacles give the driver all the needed information. Judicious use of aluminum trim and black leather on the SLK’s sculpted dash evokes high-tech luxury and underscores the car’s more serious intent. The buckets are deep and comfortably supportive.

The shifter’s neat, short-throw action works well with the responsive 268-bhp V-6 with variable valve timing. New rack-and-pinion steering ensures sharp turn-in and great on-center feel. The SLK’s oversized 13-inch ventilated front disc brakes with four-piston calipers and 11.4-inch two-piston rear solid discs are very impressive, and befitting a true sports roadster.

The base SLK comes standard with the six-speed manual, the aforementioned powerful four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and Brake Assist, electronic traction control with ESP, 17-inch, alloy wheels and 225/45 (front) and 245/40 R17 (rear) V-rated tires. Available options include a seven-speed, sport electronic automatic with driver-adaptive shift logic, Bose Audio Package, and Luxury Package.

For even more serious drivers, the optional Sport Package includes aggressive front and rear fascias, integrated fog lights, side sill extensions, rear wing, oval-tipped exhaust outlets, titanium-look power window switch panels, sport grille, rear window wiper/washer, metallic paint, and more. The seven-speed automatic is very smooth, but it takes some practice, if you like shifting manually, to learn to optimize the transmission’s additional setting.
